Khmer Calligraphy 2020

This year, I’m introducing a new initiative for my calligraphy project. Every April, I will be posting 1 Khmer (Cambodian) calligraphy piece a day. #khmerappreciationmonth

For me, writing in Khmer is not natural. I haven’t written Khmer since I was in 2nd grade. I was pulled out of bilingual program because the teachers thought I would have a hard time excelling in English (meanwhile my math and science was amazing!). At the time, I didn’t think too much about it. But as I got older, I got sad and upset that my knowledge in my mother tongue was stunted. I tried to learn to read and write on my own, buying children’s book to read in Khmer or buying primary/secondary vocabulary books. This past year, I’ve been learning about how the letters are formed and how to create art with it. I hope you enjoy looking at the work as much as I’ve enjoyed the journey to create them.
